Box Score Quincy, Mass. – Eastern Nazarene erupted for ten runs in the fifth inning and the host Lions posted a 17-5 win over Clark University in non-league baseball action on Monday afternoon at Bradley Field.
The loss for the Cougars drops their record to 7-11 overall in advance of one of the biggest weeks in recent program history. Clark will play five games this week against New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes – a stretch that will go a long way in finding out if they will make the postseason for the first time since 2010.
In today's matchup, Clark found itself down 2-0 in the fifth, but a Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) triple and error by ENC pushed one run across and then Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) drove in a run with a bases loaded infield single to even the score.
Things changed dramatically in the bottom of the frame when the Lions scored the aforementioned ten runs on eight hits, sending 14 batters to the plate. Pat Yee delivered one of the biggest blows with a two-run triple and then he came back up later in the inning and drew a bases loaded walk. Another huge play came when Kurt Picarelli cleared the bases with a triple to left.
Down 12-1, Clark closed the gap in the sixth with a Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) bases loaded walk and a two-run double from Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) but the Cougars would get no closer.
Only four players got hits for the Cougars, led by Hutchinson's 3-for-4 afternoon and two hits each by both Bonicki and Chochrek, while David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) had the other.
Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) took the loss for the Scarlet and White, going the first four innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs while striking out a career-best seven.
Clark embarks on its crucial slate of conference games on Tuesday with a road trip to Babson. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
