Long Ball Does In Cougars,19-5

Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. – MIT freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) clubbed a school-record tying three homeruns off of three different pitchers and drove in seven runs as the host Engineers flew past a surging Clark University squad, 19-5, in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Wednesday at Briggs Field.

Not to be outdone, Filiere's teammate Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) homered and drove in six runs of his own to help lift MIT to their fifth win in their last six games. They now improve to 14-7 overall and remain a game and half (10-3) behind first-place Wheaton (12-2) in the NEWMAC's East Division. Those two teams will play a crucial three game series this weekend beginning with a single contest at MIT on Friday.

Clark, meanwhile, slips to 8-12 overall and 5-5 in conference contests but is in a virtual tie with WPI atop the West Division.

Filiere got things going in the bottom of the first with a two-run blast to left field. Tew then delivered a huge blow in the second, crushing a grand slam to left off of Clark starter Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.).

Down 7-0, the Cougars scratched two runs across in the top of the third. After James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) doubled and Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) singled, they pulled off a double steal with Lima swiping second and Conway scampering home. Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) eventually brought Lima home with a double to left.

The Engineers tacked on two more in the third and then two more in the fourth – one of which came on a Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) double.

Filiere continued his offensive onslaught when he blasted another two-run homer in the fifth - this one off of reliever David Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Tew added two more runs in the seventh with a double to center, making the score 15-3.

After David Heller drove in a run in the eighth with a single, Filiere capped off one of the great performances in recent memory when he sent a Kai Glick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) offering over the left field fence for a three-run roundtripper.

MIT's huge offensive afternoon overshadowed a 2-for-4, three runs scored effort by Lima and a 2-for-4 outing by Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.).
