Worcester, Mass. – After more than ten days without a match, Clark University showed little rust on their way to a 6-3 win over Springfield College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
The win for the Cougars boosts their overall record to 4-8, while sending their league record to 2-1. The Pride meanwhile are also 4-8 but now sit at 1-4 in league matches.
Springfield actually opened the match up with a win at No. 1 doubles where Tanner DeVarennes and Justin Danielewicz edged past Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador), 8-6.
Clark however, won two doubles matches, beginning with Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Scott Cabell (West Hartford, Conn.) sneaking by Cameron Grant and Kyle Beynor, 8-6. Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) and Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) took No. 3 doubles, getting past Nate Weissman and Joshua Robinson, 8-5.
DeVarennes collected a victory at No. 1 where Stein retired due to injury in the first set, but Burger answered back for the Scarlet and White at No. 5, topping Weissman, 6-1, 6-0.
Pinoargote notched a win for Clark at No. 3, taking a straight set decision over Grant, 6-2, 6-3 and Goodstein made quick work of Beynor, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.
Simonson continued the Cougar run with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Robinson at No. 6 before Danielwicz fought back to knock off Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.), 7-6, 6-3.
Clark is next in action on Saturday with a home contest against MIT, while Springfield visits UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday.
