Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) twirled a three hit masterpiece over eight strong innings and host Clark University salvaged the final game of a three game series with New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears, who won the single game on Friday in the bottom of the ninth and then rallied for five runs over the final two innings in today's twinbill opener, sees their record go to 14-11 overall and 7-9 in league contests with just one conference contest remaining. For Clark, meanwhile, their record is now 9-14 but more importantly, 6-7 in NEWMAC games with four league games left on their docket.
In order for the Cougars to secure the West Division's top seed, they will need to win their four remaining conference games, beginning with Sunday's doubleheader against Emerson. They then play home contests against Babson (Tuesday) and MIT (Wednesday) next week.
Crosstown rival WPI sits in first place in the division, sporting a 19-13 record and they have played their 17 conference contests (9-8). Coast Guard's lone remaining league game is a neutral site game on Monday against Emerson – a game that will be played at Clark's Granger Field at 4:00 p.m.
Game 1: Coast Guard 10, Clark University 6
The visiting Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first off of Clark starter Conor Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.). Kyle Wood (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) and Blake Thompson (Liberty Hill, Texas) each had RBI singles, while Brendan McNeil (Pawcatuck, Conn.) provided a sacrifice fly.
Clark got on the board in the third when Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) drove in Dan Lima (Manchester, Conn.) with a single to right.
Coast Guard added single runs in the fourth and fifth, including Tim Duncan (Heath, Texas) delivering his school-record seventh home run of the season, making the score 5-1.
The Scarlet and White surged back off of Bear starting hurler Luke Sniatkowski (Verona, N.J.), touching him up for four runs in the fifth. First, Bonicki drove in Lima with the inning's first run and then Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) tacked on another with a double. The big blow came off of the bat of Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) who knocked in a pair with a two-run triple to center.
After Clark added a run on a James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) sacrifice fly in the sixth, Coast Guard made its move in the eighth. They loaded the bases with no outs and reliever Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) was able to get one out, but one run came across on an error, another on a single to left by Alex Murdoch (San Ramon, Calif.) and the final one on a Wood sacrifice fly.
The Bears then added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth when Mark Behne (Clifton, Va.) blasted a two-run homerun in the ninth.
After a rocky first inning, Walsh actually calmed down, scattering 11 hits while striking out six. Joseph Gouveia (Nashua, N.H.), who came on in relief of Walsh in the seventh took the loss after giving up those three unearned runs in the eighth.
Bonicki had two of the Cougars' five hits, while driving in two and Lima had two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
Game 2: Clark University 7, Coast Guard 1
Robinson was in complete control from start to finish in a win the Scarlet and White had to have. He allowed one unearned run in the third and along with Brett O'Keefe (Brighton, Mass.) didn't allow a hit after Wood led off the fourth with a single.
Clark was the team to get on the board first in the nightcap and they did it in a big way as Conway blasted a three-run homer to left in the bottom of the second.
Coast Guard cut into that lead when they pushed across an unearned run in the third, but the Cougars answered right back as Eglow led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun to left – his team-leading third of the season.
The Scarlet and White chased Bear starter Andrew Lucak (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) in the fifth and then Jack Kenney (Saco, Maine) drove home the speedy Hutchinson from first with a double to left.
Ahead 5-1 and with Robinson moving quickly through the Bear lineup, the Cougars tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) drove in both Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) and Lima with a single to right.
Offensively for the Cougars, Chochrek, Eglow and Hutchinson all had two hits.
