Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University bounced back from a heart-breaking 5-4 loss to MIT on Saturday with a resounding 8-1 win over Emerson College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Cougars not only improve to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in league contests, but they also lock up a berth in the upcoming conference tournament. Emerson, meanwhile, slips to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in league matches.
Clark got out of the gate quickly, sweeping through all three doubles matches with relative ease. At No. 1 doubles, Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) marched past Nik Rhodes and Matt Jenkins, 8-5.
That was followed by Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Scott Cabell (West Hartford, Conn.) making easy work of Joshua Freud and Spencer Sabo at No. 2 with an 8-0 win.
Jimmy Keogh (Worcester, Mass.) and Ross Kennedy (Winchester, Mass.) completed doubles action with an 8-2 triumph over Aren Kabarajian and Blake Greenawalt at No. 3.
The Cougars continued their excellent play with Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) opening up singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sabo at No. 4.
Both Goodstein at No. 2 Miguel Espada (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) at No. 5 followed Siegel's lead with identical scores in their victories, while Keogh had a pretty easy time with Matthew Jepsky at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1.
Pinoargote had little trouble with Rhodes at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1 but the Lions did get a win at No. 3, where Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) retired early in the second set.
Clark travels to Coast Guard on Wednesday for a crucial league showdown. A win for the Cougars would give them a bye into the league semifinals, while a loss will send them into the quarterfinal round which is scheduled to be played on Saturday, April 25.
