MIT Powers Past Clark, 17-3

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Garrett Greenwood – MIT's No. 9 hitter – smacked a pair of homeruns and drove in four runs as the visiting Engineers jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back racing to a decisive 17-3 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday.

With the win, MIT (17-9) captures the NEWMAC East Division crown for the first time and also earns the No. 1 seed in this weekend's conference tournament. The Engineers' 13-4 league record is identical to Wheaton's, but MIT took two of three from the Lyons last weekend to earn the tiebreaker.

For the Cougars (11-15), meanwhile, they can no longer win the West Division title even with a win tomorrow against Babson.

The path to the postseason for Clark now lies in the second seed in the West Division which comes down to the Cougars and Coast Guard. The Scarlet and White can earn a spot with a win tomorrow against the Beavers or with a Coast Guard loss tomorrow against Emerson. Whether final postseason spot goes to Clark or Coast Guard, that team will travel to Babson on Friday for a quarterfinal showdown with the Green and White.

In today's contest, MIT got on the board in the first when Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) blasted his league-leading 11th homerun of the season deep to left off of Clark starter Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.).

The Engineers then pushed six runs across in the second highlighted by Filiere's two-run double and a two-run single by Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.).

Two more runs came home for MIT in the third when Greenwood legged out an inside-the-park homerun.

Down, 9-0 Clark scored its three runs in the third when Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) crushed a two-run shot to left and then another run came across on an error.

Unfortunately, for the Cougars, MIT was not done as they posted six more runs in the sixth. Three of those runs came off the bat of Greenwood who launched a three-run blast to right field off of Clark reliever David Williams (New York, N.Y.).

Tew then wrapped up the scoring with his two run shot to left – completing his two regular season games against the Cougars going 5-for-10 with two homeruns and ten RBI.

Rob Bertucci (Belleville, Ill.) who came on in relief of K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.), tossed three innings, allowing just one hit while recording three strikeouts to earn the win.

Six different players had two hits or more for the Engineers led by three by Tew. Greenwood finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI, while Filiere was on base five times, going 2-for-3 with three walks, four RBI and three runs scored.

Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) was the lone Clark player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4.

Tomorrow's game against Babson will begin at 3:00 p.m.
