Beaver Bats Deny Cougars Postseason Berth

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Babson College jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and the visiting Beavers used an offensive attack that swiped seven bases – including home twice to deny Clark University a postseason berth with a 12-7 win over the Cougars on Wednesday afternoon in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action.

The win for the Green and White evens their record at 15-15 and wraps up their league record at 11-6. Clark, meanwhile, sees its hopes for postseason play for the first time since 2010 dashed after losing their final two league home games by a combined score of 29-12. The Beavers will now host Coast Guard on Friday in the conference's lone quarterfinal game with the winner advancing to face top-seeded MIT on Saturday.

In today's game, Babson scored five runs in the first highlighted by a three-run homerun to left by Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.). The Green and White tacked on two more in the second on a sacrifice fly by Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and a single to left by Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.).

Clark answered back with four runs in the third beginning with a David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) infield single that scored Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.). Dan Lima (Manchester, Conn.) then scored on a Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) fielder's choice. Two more runs came in on a fielding error before Beaver starting hurler Teddy Carey was able to get out of trouble.

The Cougars drew closer in the fourth as they scored another unearned run when Lima raced home on an error and then Eschen followed that with a sacrifice fly that brought home Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.).

Babson pushed out further ahead in the fifth when MacPhee tripled down the left field line and then trotted home on a Brett Ender (Skillman, N.J.) double to left center.

With two outs in the sixth, Babson plated two more. First, Halpin was hit by reliever Conor Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) and then he moved to third on a single down the right field line by MacPhee. The Beavers then executed the double steal when MacPhee started towards second but the throw was cut off by Glynn who fired home but Halpin was able to kick the ball out of Michael Eglow's (Delmar, N.Y.) glove. Another run came across on a sharp single to center by Ender, making the score 10-6.

The Green and White kept the pressure on, adding two runs in the seventh on a Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) single to right and on a throw over to first, Ayala scampered home for the Beavers second steal of home in the game.

Clark's last run came in the seventh when the Cougars worked the double steal as Conway swiped second and Hutchinson took home.

Beaver reliever Graham Stack (Arlington, Mass.) was strong in his appearance, picking up his second win of the season with four excellent innings, yielding just three hits and one earned run.

MacPhee was the offensive star of the game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Babson, while Ender was 2-for-4 with a double.

Three different Cougars – Chochrek, Conway and Glynn – all had two hits and Lima and Hutchinson each scored two runs.

Clark is back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader at Nichols College beginning at 12:00 p.m.
