Cougars Earn Split With Nichols

Dudley, Mass. – Senior speedster Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) drove in five runs from his leadoff spot on the day, helping Clark University earn a split of two seven inning games with Worcester-area rival Nichols College in non-league baseball on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 – Clark University 5, Nichols College 1

Kevin Kirley (Clinton, Mass.) allowed no runs on one hit through three innings of work before the Cougars struck for five runs over the next three innings to take a 5-1 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Kirley fell to 0-3 on the year after giving up five runs (all earned) through 5.1 innings of work on six hits while walking two and striking out one.

The Cougars were led by Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) with two hits in three at bats including a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning to seal the deal, while Lima drove in two with a single to center in the fifth.

The Bison were paced by freshman Nick Roy (Middletown, Conn.) with two hits while driving in one while classmate Greg Eng (Middletown, R.I.) went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Jack Kenney (Saco, Maine) earned his second win of the year after allowing just two runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out one over six innings of work.

Game 2 – Nichols 11, Clark University 6

The Bison capitalized on a six-run first inning to take care of business against the Cougars and take the nightcap, 11-6.

Eight different student-athletes had hits for the Bison including Roy, freshman Spencer Madden (Nashua, N.H.), and sophomore Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) each with two hits.

Lima drove in three runs while Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) had two RBI to lead the Cougars.

The Bison sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Nichols scored six runs in the inning, capped by a RBI-single from Cook – who led off the inning with a walk – scoring freshman Jonny Doyon (Meriden, Conn.).

Junior Ryan McLane (Wallingford, Conn.) had a solid outing to earn his second win of the year. McLane allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks through 6.1 innings of work.

Freshman Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing eight runs (all earned) on eight hits and one walk through four innings of work.

The Cougars (12-17) close out their season against Elms on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
