Babson Park, Mass.— Felix Wee (Kenningston Park, Singapore) won at both number three doubles and number four singles as top-seeded Babson College defeated fourth-seeded Clark University, 5-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinal match on Saturday afternoon at Farwell Courts.
With its seventh consecutive victory, Babson (14-3) set a new school record for wins in a season, and advances to the conference title match for the third straight year. Clark, meanwhile, sees its season come to an end at 6-11.
Connor DeFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) got the Beavers off to an early lead with an 8-3 triumph over the Cougars' duo of junior Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and sophomore Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) at number one doubles.
The Babson tandem of senior Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) and junior Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) defeated Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.), 8-4, at number two, and the Green and White completed the sweep as Wee and Ben Roque (Coral Gables, Fla.) topped seniors Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and Scott Cabell (West Hartford, Conn.), 9-7, at number three.
The Beavers then made quick work of the Cougars in singles play, winning the first set in all six matches. Junior Isaac Thylen (Surfside, Fla.) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Pinkney at number two, and Wee sealed the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 result over Goodstein at number four.
In the end it was the final match for the Scarlet and White senior class of Burger, Scott Cabell (West Hartford, Conn.), Goodstein, Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) and graduate student Stein, who won 45 career matches since their arrival in 2012 and made four straight conference tournament appearances.
Babson, which is ranked 16th in the most recent ITA regional poll, will take on second-seeded MIT Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
