Box Score Northampton, Mass. - Visiting Clark University moved through their New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener with relative ease, dispatching Smith College, 3-0, on Tuesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium. Game scores were 25-13, 25-8 and 25-13.
With the win, the Cougars continue the impressive start to their 2015 campaign, moving to 8-0, while the host Pioneers drop to 2-5 overall.
Freshman Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was the star of the night, leading a trio of Clark players who finished with double-digit kills, with a match-high 14 on a sizzling .875 hitting percentage while adding nine digs.
In addition to Mercado, Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) posted another double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) chipped in with ten of her own.
After a first set that saw them hit .467 en route to the 25-13 win, Clark posted 12 kills and five service aces as they recorded a 25-8 win in the second.
They wrapped up the match with another 25-13 score, this time using their hitting prowess once again, hammering down 17 kills in the set.
Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) continued the outstand play of her freshman campaign, handing out 32 assists.
Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) added 12 digs and seven assists while Courtney Pharr (Seattle, Wash.) chipped in with eight kills and a pair of service aces.
Clark will return to the court on Saturday when they host a tri-match with Coast Guard Academy and Western New England.
