Box Score New London, Conn. - Senior Sarah Hills scored the only goal of the game on a header in the 19th minute leading Coast Guard to a 1-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Friday evening.
With the win, the Bears have now defeated the Scarlet and White in three consecutive seasons dating back to the 2013 campaign. Coast Guard also improves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Cougars drop to 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Freshman goalkeeper Anna Niedermeyer (1-0) registered five saves in her first start to earn her first collegiate win for the Bears.
Coast Guard got all it would need when Hills took a pass from classmate Hannah Jansson and snuck her shot by Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) for her team-high fifth goal of the season at 18:13.
Paolini (2-5-2), who had six saves in the game, came up big in the 65th minute when she denied Hills on a penalty kick with a diving stop to keep it a one goal deficit.
Clark outshot the Bears 14-9, with three each coming from Kara Fischer (Belmont, Mass.) and Haley Connors (Burrillville, R.I.).
Both teams are off until non-conference contests on Wednesday. Coast Guard hosts Mitchell College at 5:00 p.m. while the Cougars visit Elms College at 7:30 p.m. in their final non-conference contest of the season.
