Box Score Chicopee, Mass. – Host Elms College erased an early 1-0 deficit and the surging Blazers posted a 2-1 win over Clark University in non-league women's soccer action on Wednesday evening at Leary Field.
With their first-ever win over the Scarlet and White, Elms improves to 6-2-1 overall. They had dropped the previous six meetings to Clark by a combined score of 22-3.
Things actually looked to be headed back in that same direction when the Cougars broke the scoreless tie as Kara Fischer (Belmont, Mass.) received a long pass for a 2-on-1 breakaway. Elms senior goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y) raced from her net to challenge Fischer, who chipped a ball over Rinaudo and then tucked the ball into the open goal to give Clark a 1-0 lead.
With 8:49 remaining in the first half, the Blazers netted the equalizer as Madison Jung (Stafford Springs, Conn.) fired a cross through the hands of Clark senior goalie Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) to the foot of Brie Voight (Springfield, Mass.), who placed a shot into the open goal, knotting the game at 1-1.
The Blazers carried their momentum into the second half and eventually went ahead in the 58th minute. Christina Leonardo (Enfield, Conn.) launched a ball to the far side, where Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.) fired a shot on goal, which was turned aside by Paolini, but the rebound came right back to Soucia and she registered the game winning tally at 57:07.
The Blazers outshot the Cougars, 16-6, and Rinaudo needed to make just one save for Elms, while Paolini stopped a game-high six shots.
Clark (2-6-2) will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to NEWMAC rival Mount Holyoke College at 6:30 p.m.
