Bears Deliver Knockout Early, Top Cougars 74-63

New London, Conn. – Sophomore Ethan Boose recorded his third double-double of the season as he led the way with 25 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Coast Guard scored the first 19 points of the game and beat Clark 73-64 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Bears improve to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Clark drops to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard beat the Cougars for the fifth time in the last six meetings at home.

Boose was 10 of 15 from the floor to lead the Bears. Senior Kevin Alvarez added 17 points while classmate Ricky Rodriguez finished with ten points in the win for Coast Guard.

The Bears shot 44.6 percent (29 of 65) in the win making 2 of 13 from 3-point range while Clark was 24 of 68 from the field (35.3 percent) and made 7 of 23 from behind the arc.

Clark missed its first 13 field goal attempts and trailed 19-0 before a basket by senior Corey Gomes (Uxbridge, Mass.) with 12:57 left in the first half. The Bears made eight of 12 field goals from the floor to open the game.

Coast Guard led 23-2 with 11:11 left in the opening half as the Engineers made just one of its first 16 field goal attempts.

The Cougars would get as close as 13 in the first half, using a 7-1 run, to cut the deficit  to 30-17 with 7:18 left before the Bears responded with six straight of their own for a 36-17 lead with 5:21 left in the half.

Clark  got back in the game using a 15-4 run with junior Lamar Berk (Saint Augustine, Fla.) scoring the final nine points of the run for the Cougars cutting the lead to 40-32 with 1:09 left.

The Cougars after the rocky start made 12 of their final 17 field goals in the first half and shot 39.4 percent (13-33) in the opening half and 5 of 12 from behind the arc. The Bears were 18 of 39 (46.2 percent) and 2 of 8 from 3-point range in the first half.

Clark scored the first basket of the second half to make the score 45-35 before the Bears ran off eight straight pushing the lead to 53-35 with 16:46 left in the game and cruised to the win.

Berk led the Cougars with a double-double finishing with 18 points and ten rebounds while senior Tyler Huffman (West Hartford, Conn.) added 14 points and freshman Luca McCormick (Bradenton, Fla.) finished with 11 points.

The Scarlet and White travel down Park Avenue on Wednesday for a crucial league matchup against WPI.
