Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Visiting MIT closed the game on a 12-2 run over the final seven plus minutes, rallying from a 22-point first half deficit to stun host Clark University, 66-60, in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center.
With the win, the Engineers have now won five of their last six games to improve to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in conference contests. Meanwhile, the Scarlet and White have lost their last five games to slip to 5-14.
Amazingly, only four players scored for MIT, but freshman Bradley Jomard (Paris, France) and senior Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) did most of the heavy lifting for the Engineers, combining for 50 of their 66 total points.
Things started fantastically for the Cougars, as they raced out a 20-6 lead after the visitors were called for two technical fouls on the same possession and Tyler Huffman (West Hartford, Conn.) nailed all four free throws and canned a free throw line jumper on the same possession.
The lead moved to 29-7 after the Scarlet and White ran off nine of the next ten points as Luke LaLima (Colts Neck, N.J.) knocked down a deep three-pointer and Clark got hoops from Corey Gomes (Uxbridge, Mass.), David Mercier (Milford, Mass.) and another basket from Huffman.
MIT answered back as they finally started to get their offense going and they went on a 14-0 run that included ten straight points from Pedley – the final six on back-to-back triples.
Clark was able to respond on a Huffman three-point bomb and an inside hoop from Lamar Berk (Saint Augustine, Fla.) to move the lead back to double figures, but Russell Johnson (New York, N.Y.) found a cutting Jomard for his second thunderous dunk of the half and then Pedley beat the buzzer with a twisting jumper, cutting the lead to just nine at 35-26 at halftime.
The Engineers got as close as four in first few minutes of the second half but the Cougars were able to keep them at bay, bumping the lead to 48-38 following a Joe Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) corner three-pointer with 13:04 left to play.
Jomard scored five straight to get MIT within five but this time it was Luca McCormick (Bradenton, Fla.) who pushed the Clark led out further with his lone triple of the afternoon.
Pedley and Jomard combined for all eight points in a short burst capped by a Jomard three-pointer and a Pedley jumper that evened the score at 54-54.
Clark went ahead 58-54 on two Atkinson free throws and a Gomes banker, but MIT surged ahead for the first time when Jomard drilled a three-pointer and made a jumper on consecutive trips down the floor, making the score 59-58 with 2:55 left to play.
After Gomes' basket the Scarlet and White went cold when they could afford it the least, missing five straight shots and committing three turnovers.
MIT, meanwhile, was took advantage building their lead to six as Ryan Frankel (New York, N.Y.) made four straight free throws to seal the improbable comeback.
After shooting just 37 percent in the first half, the Engineers warmed up in the final 20, connecting on 48 percent of their attempts, including draining five second half triples.
Clark, meanwhile, shot the ball well for the game, making 45 percent from the field and they went a perfect 14-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Jomard finished with a career-high 27 points – his sixth game this season with 20 points or more, while Pedley added 23 points and five boards while connecting on four three-pointers. Johnson did a little bit of everything for the visitors, totaling six points, a game-best 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The Cougars were paced by Huffman, who scored 17 of his team-high 19 in the first half. Atkinson chipped in with 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds and Berk added seven points and seven boards.
Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday with NEWMAC contests. MIT visits Springfield while Clark entertains Coast Guard.
