Box Score Norton, Mass. – Host Wheaton College erased a 14-point second half deficit and held on for an 88-83 overtime win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
The loss for the Scarlet and White sends their overall record to 6-16 but more importantly, they are now in a tie with the Lyons at 3-8 in league games with three conference contests remaining.
With a little less than nine minutes remaining following a Corey Gomes (Uxbridge, Mass.) layup and two free throws from Tyler Huffman (West Hartford, Conn.), the Cougars looked to be prime position for a win, ahead 67-53.
Things still looked to be in Clark's favor as Gomes scored again, this time with 5:11 to go and the Cougars sitting on top at 70-61.
Wheaton, however, answered back with a 12-0 run that gave them a 73-70 lead on a Ryan Fogarty triple with 1:45 to play.
Clark was able to force overtime when John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) found Huffman for the game-tying three-pointer with 17 seconds left in regulation.
The Cougars actually never trailed for the first three minutes of the extra session as Joe Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) and David Mercier (Milford, Mass.) each got buckets and Huffman canned another triple.
When Mercier scored to make it 80-77 in favor of Clark with 2:04 to go, the Lyons ripped off eight straight points – four from the charity stripe from Fogarty and four courtesy of Billy Battaglia.
Lamar Berk (Saint Augustine, Fla.) knocked down a three-pointer to get the Cougars to within two at 85-83, but Wheaton made three of four free throws in the final 21 seconds to secure the win.
The loss for Clark spoils a night when they connected on 15 three-pointers and got 29 points and six assists from Huffman as well as 15 from Atkinson and 13 from Berk.
Battaglia led all scorers with 32 points and six boards, while Fogarty came off the bench and finished with 26.
With three regular season games remaining, the Cougars will play the next one on the road beginning with Saturday's trip to first-place Babson.
