Cougars Play Longball In 12-2 Win Over AMCATS

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) smashed two homeruns and freshman Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) was dominant over seven strong innings as Clark University rolled past Worcester-area rival Anna Maria, 12-2, in non-league baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at the Granger Baseball Diamond.

With the win, the Cougars inch back closer to the .500 mark (6-7), while the loss drops the AMCATS to 0-10 under first-year head coach Nick Marsh.

Clark opened the game with three runs in the first and never looked back. Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) led off with a walk and then stole second. After Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, Conway blasted his first of two homeruns to deep left field.

The Cougars tacked on a single run in the second on a Bonicki groundout, and then put four on the board in the third to go up 8-0. First, Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) scored on a Chris Dibble (Manchester, Conn.) single to right and Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) followed that up with an RBI triple.

The inning continued and Downing and Hutchinson pulled off a perfect double steal to plate another run and the last one came across on a Bonicki RBI triple.

Clark's offense kept its foot on the gas in the fourth as Conway led off the frame with a solo shot to deep left field and then a triple to right by Eglow was followed by a Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) double to left.

While the Cougar offense was clicking, Slepkow kept the Anna Maria batters at bay retiring nine of the first 11 batters he faced. Overall, he scattered five hits, allowing one earned run and struck out six without yielding a walk to improve to 2-0 in the season.

David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) added to Clark's offensive power when he launched a homerun with two outs in the fifth and Downing continued his excellent sophomore campaign with an RBI double to right center in the sixth.

Anna Maria got on the board in the seventh when Matt Elliott (Attleboro, Mass.) tripled to right center, scoring Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.).

The AMCATS added another run in the ninth when Jonathan Roy (Worcester, Mass.) singled home Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.).

Leahey went 2-for-4 at the plate, but took the loss on the mound, giving up 11 hits and ten earned runs in four innings of work.

Conway finished his monster afternoon 3-for-4 with the two homeruns and four RBI, while Eglow went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Downing was a terror on the basepaths, going 2-for-3 with three walks and three stolen bases from his leadoff spot.

The Scarlet and White return to the diamond on Friday when they visit Massachusetts Maritime at 3:30 p.m.
