Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Behind a pair of outstanding pitching performances, host Clark University swept a non-league baseball doubleheader with Brandeis University on a chilly Granger Baseball Diamond Sunday afternoon.
The two victories for the Cougars sends their overall record to 9-8 and gives them their first three-game winning streak of the season. For the Judges, meanwhile, their ledger dips to 5-8 following their first two games played in New England this season.
In addition to its stellar pitching, the Scarlet and White saw sophomore sensation Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) extend his hitting streak to ten games.
Winners of four of their last five games and in the midst of a five-game homestand, Clark will play host to Plymouth State on Tuesday and Nichols College on Thursday before opening up New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action next Saturday at Emerson College.
The Judges will return to action next week with three road games in four days beginning with a visit to Western New England on Tuesday.
Game 1: Clark University, Brandeis University 1
Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) was excellent on the mound for the Scarlet and White, tossing a complete game four-hitter in moving to 2-0 on the season.
In fact Robinson only gave up hits to two batters in the Judges lineup – Benjamin Bavly (Newton, Mass.) and Max Hart (Montville, Conn.).
With Robinson and Brandeis starter Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass.) in control, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Cougars plated the game's first run. James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame and then went to third on an Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) single. With one out, Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) brought Conway home with a fielder's choice.
Clark tacked on another run in the fifth with two outs. Bonicki singled up the middle, stole second and then came home on a throwing error on a David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) grounder.
Robinson, who really only had to work out of trouble in the first when he had runners on first and second with two outs, yielded a leadoff homerun to Bavly in the top of the sixth to cut the Cougar lead in half. Later in the inning with one out, Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif.) singled, then stole second, but Robinson got out of trouble with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and the threat.
Bavly went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and homerun for the Judges, while Bonicki went 2-for-3, registering his tenth multi-hit game this season.
Robinson's performance overshadowed a strong effort from Miller, who went six innings and scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run.
Game 2: Clark University 6, Brandeis University 2
The Judges were ahead 2-1 when the Cougars put together a three-hit, four-run bottom of the third inning to take control enroute to the twinbill sweep.
Brandeis went ahead in the first off of Clark starter Taylor Serrano (Essex, Conn.) when Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass.) singled home Bavly, who led off the inning with a walk.
Clark evened the score in the bottom of the first when Bonicki singled up the middle and then stole second. After an Eschen walk, Conway brought Bonicki in with a base hit to left.
The Judges went ahead 2-1 in the third on three straight singles by Bavly, Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn.) and Heineman.
Their lead was short lived, however, as the Cougars pounced on Brandies starter Ryan Pocock (Westford, Mass.) in the bottom of the inning.
Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) led off with a walk and then with one out, Eschen hit what turned out to be a perfectly placed swinging bunt that hugged the line towards third base but never crossed before coming to a rest parallel to the bag in fair territory. Now with, runners on first and second, Conway walked to load the bases and then a Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) single to left brought in two. That was followed up by a Chochrek triple to the right center field gap that brought in two more, making the score 5-2.
Clark added another run in the fourth when Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) singled, moved to third on a Downing double and then came home on a Bonicki groundout.
Brandeis threatened in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two outs on an infield hit and a pair of walks. Serrano was able to escape any trouble when he got the potential tying run in Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn.) to fly out harmlessly to center field.
Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.) came in and tossed the final two innings for the Cougars, retiring all six batters he faced to secure the sweep.
Heineman was the only player on either team to get more the one hit in the nightcap as he posted two hits and two RBI for the Judges, while both Eglow and Chochrek had two RBI for the Scarlet and White.
