Clark Takes Two From PSU-Altoona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Leesburg, Fla. – Clark University scored a combined 25 runs over two games and the Cougars swept a twinbill with Penn State-Altoona on Sunday afternoon in non-league baseball action at Pat Thomas Stadium.

With the two victories, the Scarlet and White improve to 3-2 on the season while the Lions are now 1-8.

Down 1-0 in the first the Cougars pushed across a pair of runs to take an early lead. Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) snuck a rocket down the left field line for a leadoff double and then came home on a Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) single up the middle.

After Bonicki advanced to second with one out, James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) stroked a single to left bringing him home for the go ahead run.

Clark added another run in the third on an unearned run and then tacked on yet another run in the fourth courtesy of the second career homerun by Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine).

The Cougars added a trio of runs in the fifth, highlighted by an Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) run-scoring single.

After a pair of RBI groundouts got the Lions two runs in the top of the sixth, Clark answered back with three more in the bottom of the frame as Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) doubled to left to bring in one and a Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) single to center brought in another.

Patrick Robinson (Waterbury, Conn.) picked up the win, going the first six innings, allowing five hits and just two earned runs.

In addition to Hutchinson's heroics, Richall was 2-for-3 with the runs scored and Bonicki had two hits as well.

The Cougars jumped all over PSU-Altoona starter Jared Bailey in the nightcap, plating seven runs in the top of the first. Dailey was undone by his defense as they committed five errors – including three in the seven-run first. The big blow of the inning came on a Richall two-run double as he was just one of seven different Clark players to drive in at least one run.

Eglow, Chochrek and Bonicki all had two hits for Clark, who got a solid outing on the mound from Mike Tice, who went the first four innings before giving way to Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.).

Both Eglow and Chochrek had RBI hits in the third, making the score 10-2 but the Lions fought back with their second two-run homer of the day when Jim Shomberg crushed a Tice offering over the right centerfield fence.

Yet again Chochrek drove in another run in the fifth and then freshmen Nate Keuter (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) both got in on the act with Kelley driving in a run and the Keuter bringing home a pair of a double to left.

Clark will continue its stay in the Sunshine State with a doubleheader Cornell College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
