Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – MIT slugger Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) blasted two homeruns in the second game and drove in seven runs in the two games combined as the visiting Engineers swept a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader with Clark University on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors won the opener 14-7 and then took the nightcap 13-3 to catapult to 9-8 overall and 6-1 in conference contests. For the Cougars, meanwhile, who lost their first three games of the weekend to WPI by a combined four runs, see the depth of the Engineer lineup drop them to 12-16.
After a 7-for-7 day at the plate on Saturday for Clark sophomore Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) collected four hits on the day, setting a new school record for hits in a season (48). The old mark of 47 was set several times but most recently by Stephen DeMartino in 2010.
With 84 hits through his first 57 career games, Bonicki is already halfway to the school's all-time hits record of 159 set by John Galvin from 1999-02.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with conference road contests. MIT returns to Worcester for a meeting with WPI while the Cougars travel to Babson.
Game 1: MIT 14, Clark University 7
In the opener, the Cougars actually jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first courtesy of a David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) two-run double and a Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) run-scoring single.
The Engineers answered back with single runs in the second and third on a John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) RBI double and a David Heller (Fair Lawn, N.J.) single to right, knotting the contest at 3-3 after three innings.
MIT then erupted for four runs off of Clark starter Conor Walsh (Barnstable, Mass.) in the top of the fourth highlighted by another Heller RBI single.
After a quiet fifth, the Engineers tacked on an unearned run in the sixth to go ahead 8-3 then added five more in the seventh. In that frame both Filiere and Alec Echevarria (Chula Vista, Calif.) drove in two with a single and double, respectively.
Clark got back on the board when Hutchinson tripled to center and then came home on a Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) single and Downing worked his way around the bases to score on a James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) fielder's choice.
MIT added another in the ninth on a wild pitch and then Clark got two in the bottom of the frame to finalize the scoring. Pinch hitter Nick O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) walked and then raced home when Bonicki laced the record-setting hit to center – a triple to the triangle. Pinch runner Taylor Serrano (Essex, Conn.) then scampered home on wild play to make the score 14-7.
The Engineers banged out 16 hits, including three apiece from Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.), Heller and Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.), while Echevarria drove in three.
Nick Locascio (Naples, Fla.) started for MIT and went the first six innings, scattering 11 hits and giving up five runs. Eric Tu (San Ramon, Calif.) came in and tossed three innings of one-hit relief to pick up the save.
Bonicki went 3-for-5, while Downing, Eschen and Hutchinson all had two hits for Clark.
Game 2: MIT 13, Clark University 3
Freshman hurler Zeke Long (Albuquerque, N.M.) tossed five effective innings for the Engineers as they used three homeruns to jump out to an early 7-0 lead.
Clark starter Mitch Mondro (Westford, Mass.) gave up a two-run homerun to Filiere in the first and then surrendered five more runs in the third.
Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.) led off the third with a single and then stole second. He came around on Drago's first homer of the season. After Greenwood singled through the left side, Filiere was at it again, launching a towering two-run blast to left that gave the visitors a 6-0 lead.
That lead continued to swell as MIT pushed four more runs across in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double by Echevarria and an RBI triple from Max Lancaster (Attleboro, Mass.).
Clark finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Conway singled to center, driving in Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) who led off the inning with a single. Bonicki then scored on a ringing liner to short by Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.).
Later, Richall walked and then went to third when Daniel Davidoff (Old Tappan, N.J.) singled and then scored on a Hutchinson fielder's choice.
The final two runs of the game came in the eighth when Greenwood drove in Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) with a fielder's choice and then Filiere knocked in another when he legged out an infield hit.
MIT's top 1-2-3-4 hitters – Drago, Greenwood, Filiere and Echevarria – went a combined 10-for-19 from the plate in the nightcap, led by Filiere going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Conway had three of Clark's nine hits in the second game, while relievers Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.) and Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) were strong in their performances on the mound.
