Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Gordon College won its seventh consecutive match, topping host Clark University 6-3 in non-league men's tennis action on Monday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The win for the Fighting Scots pushes their record to an impressive 11-2 overall in advance of their return trip to Worcester on Wednesday when they take on Division I Holy Cross. For the Cougars, meanwhile, they see their record slip to 5-11 and have now dropped three straight.
Gordon jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles where they picked up both of their wins in tight fashion. After Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) bested Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.), 8-5 at No. 1, they eked out a 9-8 victory at No. 2 where Nate Lookwhy (Westboro, Mass.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) got by Andrey Samodaev (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jacob Malicky (South Egremont, Mass.).
Clark's doubles victory came at No. 3 as Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jimmy Keogh (Worcester, Mass.) defeated Jon Daughetry (Norfolk, Va.) and Kris Marineau (Auburn, N.H.).
As singles action opened up, Hall extended the Gordon lead when he made quick work of Samodaev at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0 and then Godwin got by Malicky at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.
Clark closed the gap when Keogh picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win over Daugherty at No. 6 but Mike D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) sealed the match for the Fighting Scots with his 6-3, 6-2 decision over Siegel at No. 4.
The final two matches went three sets with each team getting one of them. Casady got past Pinoargote with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 verdict before Pinkney topped Lookwhy with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 result at No. 3.
Clark will return to action on Wednesday as well with New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference showdown with Emerson College.
