Eschen, Slepkow Lead Cougars By Pride

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) drove in a career-high five runs and Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) blasted a homerun as Clark University snapped a seven-game losing streak with a resounding 14-2 win over Springfield College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Friday afternoon.

The win for the Scarlet and White sends their overall record to 13-18 and gives them the first win in the crucial three-game series against the Pride (10-14-1).

Clark got another strong performance on the mound from freshman Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.), who went the first six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run on his way to his league leading fourth win.

The Cougars staked Slepkow to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) drove in another with an RBI single.

Springfield cut the lead in half when they scored on a fielder's choice from Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) in the bottom of the first.

Clark pushed the lead to five in the fourth inning plating four runs. Chochrek kicked things off with a double, coming around to score the first run of the inning on a single from Chris Dibble (Manchester, Conn.). A single put runners on first and second for Eschen, who clubbed a one hop double to left center, scoring both. A single from James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) capped the scoring for the Cougars.

The Scarlet and White added to the lead again in the seventh, scoring seven runs and bringing 12 batters to the plate. An error, single, sacrifice bunt, and a hit batter loaded the bases for Dibble, who smacked a two run double. A single from Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) plated two more and then a single and walk loaded the bases again for Eschen who followed with a bases clearing double.

Clark made it 14-2 with a home run from Chochrek in the eighth. Chochrek, Dibble, Downing and Eschen all had two hits for the Cougars while Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) had three hits and three runs scored.

The Pride and Clark will wrap up its three-game set won Saturday when it plays a doubleheader in Worcester starting at 12:00 PM.
