Eschen Shines In Senior Day Sweep Of Springfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – The Clark University baseball offense was in high gear all afternoon as they banged out a combined 32 hits on their way to collecting a crucial New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader sweep of Springfield College at a windy Granger Diamond on Saturday.

The win for the Cougars gives them a series sweep of the Pride after winning in convincing fashion in Springfield on Friday afternoon. Clark now sits at 15-18 and 5-8 in conference contests, while Springfield sees their record dip to 10-15-1 as they have now dropped four straight and are just 1-8 in true road contests this season.

Slugger David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) was the catalyst all afternoon for the Cougars as he went 5-for-10 at the plate including a pair of monster home runs, giving him six for the season, tying the single season school record.

Both teams return to action with very important conference contests. Springfield hosts MIT on Sunday, while the Cougars welcome Babson on Tuesday.

Game 1: Clark University 11, Springfield College 6

Clark starter Mike Tice (Chelmsford, Mass.) wasn't at his best but he was good enough combined with a potent offense to move to 5-0 on the mound in his inaugural season for the Scarlet and White.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) walked and scored on a James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) groundout. An unearned run came home in the form of Eschen when Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error.

Springfield cut that lead in half when Peter Marsciano (Allentown, N.J.) scored on an Evan Moore (Portsmouth, R.I.) single to right in the top of the third.

Clark pushed its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the frame when Eschen launched a blast to left and then runs came in on singles by Eglow and Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.).

Amazingly, the Pride scored four runs to even the game in the top of the fourth. The huge blow came off of the bat of Kyle Allen, who drove in two with a single right.

With the game tied at 5-5, Clark scored four runs of their own to go ahead 9-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

Singles by Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.), Bonicki and Eschen brought home one run and then Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) drove in two more with his stinging single to right. Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) completed the four run inning when his blistering hit back through the box banged off of starter Dan Green and a Conway was able to race home.

Ahead 9-5, Springfield closed the gap in the fifth on a Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) single but Clark wasted little time getting that run back when Conway drove in another run with a base hit of his own.

Tice went the first five innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs but Brett O'Keefe (Brighton, Mass.) was stellar in relief, tossing four shutout innings to register his third save of the season.

Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) and Fraioli each had two hits for the Pride, while Conway led the Clark charge with three hits and two RBI. Both Eschen and Bonicki scored three runs while, they both – along with Downing, Richall, Conway and Chochrek all had two hits.

Game 2: Clark University 8, Springfield College 1

Staked to an early 7-0 lead, Clark starter Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) was spectacular on the mound, tossing 8.1 innings, allowing only five hits and striking out eight as the Cougars were never really threatened in the nightcap.

Downing opened the five-run first by scoring on a wild pitch and then RBI singles from Eglow, Richall, Chris Dibble (Manchester, Conn.) and Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) had the Cougars in control early.

Clark tacked on two more in the second courtesy of Eschen's second homerun of the afternoon, which was another long blast to left.

Robinson, meanwhile, was in total cruise control, retiring the first eight batters he faced and didn't give up a hit until there was one out in the fourth.

The Cougars went ahead 8-0 on Richall's RBI single in the fourth.

Springfield's lone run came in the seventh when Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) doubled to begin the inning and then scored on Drabinski's single to left.

The Scarlet and White knocked around Pride starter Kyle Naples (Kensington, Conn.), who allowed 14 hits and eight earned runs in four innings of work.

Every starter in the lineup had a hit for the Cougars, who were led by Eschen and Richall who both had three.
