Cambridge, Mass. – MIT swept all three doubles matches and went on to take a 7-2 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis play on Saturday morning on the duPont Tennis Courts.
With the victory MIT remains undefeated in NEWMAC play with a 5-0 record while the Cougars see their run of four straight trips to the postseason come to an end after being eliminated from NEWMAC Tournament contention.
MIT (10-4) did not have any trouble in doubles action as the Engineers only gave up a total of two games rolling to an early 3-0 advantage in the match. The Engineers' No. 1 team of senior Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa.) and junior Avi Walden (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) helped the hosts to the sweep, taking an 8-1 win over Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.).
In singles action MIT took the top four flights, all in straight sets, to secure the match victory. Wang defeated Andrey Samodaev (Boca Raton, Fla.) at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, with junior Kenny Gea (Irvine, Calif.) winning by the same score at No. 2 over Pinkney.
In the No. 3 match it was senior Dennis Garcia (Corpus Christi, Texas) taking a 6-1, 6-0 win, while at No. 4 senior Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif.) also won in straight sets for the Engineers.
Clark (6-13, 1-4 NEWMAC) avoided the shutout in the No. 5 and 6 matches, both of which only were played to one set. Teodor Nicola-Antoniu (Bucharest, Romania) took a close one for the Cougars at No. 5 with a 7-5 win over senior Alex Jaffe (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), with freshman Mateo Gomez (Bogota, Columbia) winning 6-2 over senior Justin Cheung (Sydney, Australia) in the No. 6 contest.
The Cougars wrap up their season with a home contest on Wednesday against Coast Guard Academy.
