Norton, Mass. – Wheaton College swept through doubles action with relative ease on their way to an 8-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
The win for the Lyons gets their league slate off on the right foot as they improve to 4-3 overall, while the Cougars sit at 5-9.
Things started off well for the hosts as Will White and Alden Zeff teamed up to take down Andrey Samodaev (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Teodor Nicola-Antoniu (Bucharest, Romania), 8-5 at No. 2. Wheaton doubled their advantage when the third flight went to Shreve Archer and Tyler Butler as they made quick work of Jimmy Keogh (Worcester, Mass.) and Mateo Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) at No. 3, 8-2.
The hosts completed the doubles sweep when David Gassen and Jeremiah Ryser edged out Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) 8-6 at No. 1.
Unfortunately for the Cougars singles action seemed to be pretty much the same, and they didn't get their only point until after the match was decided.
Ryser bested Nicola-Antoniu 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and then Zeff dispatched of Gomez 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 to clinch the match for Wheaton. The Lyons then got a 6-1, 6-3 win from Gassen over Samodaev at No. 1 before Pinkney got the Scarlet and White on the board with 6-2, 6-2 win over Archer at No. 3.
The Cougars are off until Saturday when they host Babson College in a NEWMAC match at 1:00 p.m.
