Cougars Downed By Lyons, 14-2

Worcester, Mass. – Wheaton College hammered out 17 hits – nine of which were for extra bases – and the visiting Lyons posted a convincing 14-2 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened:
Wheaton got their first runs in the top of the third when they strung together four hits off of Clark starter Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.), highlighted by a Josh LaJoie (Somers, Conn.) RBI double to left center.

Clark got one back in the bottom of the frame when Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) doubled to begin the inning and then came home on an Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

The Lyons pushed in four more in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two-run blast from Zach Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass.), making the score 7-1.

The Cougars scratched their other run across in the bottom of the fifth when Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) tripled and then came home on a Chochrek groundout.

Wheaton continued to tack on runs as the game went on, including getting a run in the sixth on a LaJoie RBI double and then another later on in the ninth on the first career homerun from Chris Ruocco (Lexington, Mass.).

Inside The Numbers:
Robinson gets saddled with the loss after going the first 2.1 innings for Clark, allowing six hits and four earned runs. His counterpart, Mike Brummel (Bridgewater, Mass.) tossed five innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs.

LaJoie, batting in the leadoff spot, went 3-for-5 with three doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. In addition to LaJoie, Jared Sharkey (West Bridgewater, Mass.) also had three hits and two runs scored.

For their part, Clark had 12 hits of their own led by a 2-for-4, two double performance by Bonicki, while Downing, Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.), Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) and Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) all had two hits as well.

Up Next:
The Scarlet and White jump right back into action on Thursday with a home contest against Worcester County rival Nichols College. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
