The Lead: The Clark University Women's Volleyball team swept the undefeated Owls of Keene State College on Friday evening in non-conference action. Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) lead all players with 19 spectacular kills on the night to lift the Cougars to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Cougars took set one in the closest match of the night with a final score of 25-21. The two teams traded the first five points back and forth before Clark went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) tallied three kills throughout the rally.
-The Cougars held onto the lead until a home team error allowed the Owls to tie the game at 15 apiece.
-The visitors took a 21-20 lead following a kill by Niamh Dodd, but the Cougars put an end to their scoring there. They finished the set on another 5-0 run highlighted by kills from Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Ramos.
-The second set was dominated by the Cougars as they held the lead the entire set and took a quick 25-14 victory.
-Ramos and Mercado combined for 11 kills in the second set posting seven kills and four kills respectively. A kill from Ramos gave the Cougars their largest lead of the set (17-5).
-Ramos finished out the win for Clark with back to back aces to end the match (25-14).
-The Owls came out strong in the last set as they took an early 5-2 lead but the Cougars did not waste any time capturing the lead following a 3-0 rally to tie the game at 5-5.
-Clark dominated the remainder of the set and a monster kill for game point from Mercado gave the Cougars the ultimate 25-13 victory and 3-0 sweep to end the Owls 15 game winning streak.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Ramos lead all players with 19 kills and 17 digs on the night while Mercado followed her lead with 13 kills of her own.
-Kendra Campbell (North Kingstown, R.I.) checked in with a game high four aces for Clark while Torino led all players with 38 assists.
-Rachel Lamica (Malone, N.Y.) led the Owls with 12 kills and Bailey Wilson (Moorpark, Calif.) added 23 assists on the night.
