Barksdale, Collier Duo Strikes in Season Opener Victory, 3-1

-The Lead: The Clark University field hockey team kicked off the 2018 season with a 3-1 victory over the Sharks of Simmons College on Friday night under the lights at Daly field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark got on the board first after 21 minutes of scoreless play. Sophomore Chase Collier (Lisbon, Maine) tipped in a pass from first year, Emma Boland (Redding, Conn.) on the right side for the 1-0 lead.

-Senior goalkeeper, Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) made three first half saves to help the Cougars take the 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

-Simmons tied the game eight minutes into the second half when Hannah Scott (Claremont, N.H.) scooped up a ball in front of the cage and buried it in the right corner (1-1).

-With under 20 minutes to play Clark posted back to back goals. Following a penalty corner, junior Kaitlyn DeBlois (Turner, Maine) collected a rebound off of the goalie's pads and crossed the ball to Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) on the left post who deflected it in for the 2-0 lead.

-Just two minutes later junior Mikayla Pantano (East Bridgewater, Mass.) notched her first goal of the season when she redirected a pass from Barksdale to the back of the net (3-1). Michaud made four more saves in the second half to help the Cougars clinch the 3-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Clark took seven shots and put six on goal.

-Simmons took 11 shots with eight on goal.

-Michaud made seven saves in the victory and kicks off the season with a 1-0 record.

-Simmons goalkeeper, Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made three saves in the setback.

-Simmons was awarded 11 penalty corners while Clark lined up for four.

UP NEXT

-Clark heads to Nichols College on Tuesday, September 4th for a 7:00 p.m. game.

-Simmons hosts MIT on Saturday, September 1st at 6:00 p.m.
