Baseball Edged By Amherst in Season Finale

THE BASICS

-Score: Amherst College 6, Clark University 4

-Records: Clark (16-21), Amherst (15-12-1)

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (Granger Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team dropped to the Mammoths of Amherst College in a non-conference contest on Monday evening. The Cougars wrapped up the 2019 season tonight with a 16-21 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Amherst used a three-run homer over the left center field fence from junior Severino Simeone (Weston, Mass.) to take an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

-Sophomore Joseph Palmo (Austin, Texas) put up the Mammoth's second three-run homerun of the game in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 6-0.

-With two outs in the bottom of the fifth the Cougars got two runs. Senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) singled to left center and moved into scoring position when junior Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) walked. Junior Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) earned an RBI with a single to left that scored Kelley before Ruhlin came home on a passed ball (6-2).

-Kelley sent a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Cougars within two (6-4), but the Mammoths held on for the final two-run victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Kelley led the Cougars at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) finished 2-for-4.

-Palmo went 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored for Amherst while Simeone finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.

-Senior Daniel Davidoff (Old Tappan, N.J.) (3-1) took the loss on the mound for the Cougars going three innings and striking out one batter. Senior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) closed out the game for Clark with three strikeouts in the final two innings.

UP NEXT

-The Cougars wrapped up the 2019 season today with a 16-20 overall record.

-The Mammoths hit the road again this weekend as they head to Middlebury for a three-game NESCAC series on Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Friday is set for 4:00 p.m.
