Baseball Splits with WPI in NEWMAC Doubleheader

THE BASICS

-Score Game One: WPI 5, Clark University 4

-Score Game Two: Clark University 13, WPI 6

-Records: Clark (10-14, NEWMAC 2-6), WPI (17-9, NEWMAC 3-4)

-Location: Northboro, Mass. (New England Baseball Complex)

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team split in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with the Engineers of WPI today. The Cougars were edged by the Engineers by one run in game one, 5-4, before running away with a 7-run victory in game two, 16-6. The Cougars finished with two victories out of the three-game series with WPI this weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: WPI 5, Clark 5

-The Engineers put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third when senior Ryan Tropeano (Pembroke, Mass.) singled to shortstop to score first year Michael Fraser (Mashpee, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead. The hosts added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when junior David Larson (Port Tobacco, Md.) homered and senior Austin Lindner (Princeton Jct, N.J.) sent an RBI single to right field to score his classmate Steven Gallagher (Coventry, R.I.) to go ahead 3-0.

-Sophomore Jordan DeDonato (Danvers, Mass.) singled to left field to score Larson in the bottom of the sixth to extend WPI's lead to 4-0.

-The Cougars came alive in the top of the eighth with four runs. Junior Collin Porter (Brookfield, Conn.) used an RBI single, bunt to score junior Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) before junior Callum Sawden (Old Lyme, Conn.) doubled to right center to score Porter and senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) (4-3). Junior Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) earned an RBI when he got on base by a walk to send his classmate Rudy Sarro (New Fairfield, Conn.) home and tie the game at 4-4.

-The Engineers used an single to right field from DeDonato to score first year Frank D'Alessio (Morganville, N.J.) in the bottom of the eighth for the 5-4 final victory.

-Sophomore Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) took the loss of the mound for Clark and falls to 1-3 on the season. He pitched seven innings and struck out four batters.

-Senior Dominic Fusco (North Haven, Conn.) earned the victory on the mound for WPI and improves to 2-0 this season.

Game Two: Clark 13, WPI 6

-Clark used 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning to break away from the Engineers. Kelley led off with a double to center field and Sawden followed up with a walk. Sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) homered to center field to score them for the 3-0 lead. Junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) followed up with a homerun of his own, to left field, to extend their lead to 4-0. With no outs still, junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) doubled to center field to score his classmate Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) and first year Andrea Casabianca (Yonkers, N.Y.) (6-0). Shaw scored on a wild pitch, Horn scored on a sacrifice fly from Sawden, and Lefebvre earned two more RBIs in his second plate appearance of the inning for the 10-0 lead.

-WPI got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to center from Gallagher that scored junior Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, Md.), unearned (10-1). Three more runs for the hosts in the bottom of the fifth brought them within six, 10-4.

-Clark added three more runs in the top of the sixth with an RBI from Jordan that scored Radovic and two RBIs from Horn to pull ahead, 13-4. WPI was able to add one more run in the seventh and eighth innings, but Clark held on for the final 13-6 victory.

-Horn finished 2-for-6 with four RBIs and one run scored for the Cougars while Lefebvre went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the victory. Radovic went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Clark.

-First year Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn.) started on the mound for Clark, going 4.2 innings and striking out six batters. Sophomore Sean Savage (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) earned the victory on the mound for Clark in 1.1 innings pitched, he improves to 3-1 this season.

-Senior Tyler Weiss (Monroe, Conn.) falls to 1-2 on the year in 3.0 innings pitched with four strikeouts.

-Clark hosts Emerson College on Tuesday, April 9th for some NEWMAC action starting at 3:30 p.m.

-WPI travels to Wheaton College on Tuesday, April 9th for a NEWMAC contest at 3:30 p.m.
