WBB: Cougars Suppressed Against MIT, 83-47

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's basketball team was edged out by MIT on Saturday afternoon as 17 points from Jocelyn Luizzi and 16 from Annika Sougstad steered the Engineers to an 83-47 final score in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at the Kneller Athletic Center.

How it Happened 
 
Junior Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) posted a team-high eight points while bringing down eight rebounds to go with her two steals and one block. 
 
Sophomore Julia Beebe (Andover, Conn.) also picked up eight points while collecting seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Sophomore Ginny Benbow (Durham, Conn.) rounded out the leading scorers for Clark, contributing eight points in 24 minutes off the bench. 
 
For MIT, Luizzi and Sougstad were accompanied by Christina Antonakaki and Kyle Gallagher who finished with 15 and ten points respectively to lead the Engineers' starting unit. Alexis Groark tallied ten points in 17 minutes to lead all bench-scorers in the game. 
 
MIT opened up the game on a 10-0 run before a lay-in from Favaloro at the 6:29 mark of the first quarter gave Clark its first bucket of the day. MIT would get nine points from Antonakakis and Luizzi during the first quarter to take a 31-7 lead following ten minutes of play. 
 
The Cougars picked up the pace in the second quarter to keep up with MIT with both teams posting 14 points prior to the halftime break. With 5:50 to go in the session, Beebe's offensive rebound and lay-up capped off an 8-3 run for the Cougars. Clark controlled the scoring in the final two minutes as a three from Hallie Johnson (Princeton, Mass.) and a lay-in from Benbow cut the gap to 45-21 heading into the intermission.
 
MIT added to its lead to start the third quarter, controlling a 12 point scoreless run over the opening three and a half minutes of the half en route to a 21-10 scoring lead throughout the quarter for its largest lead of the contest at 66-27 with 2:19 to go in the third quarter.
 
Clark re-grouped, showing a burst of energy midway through the final quarter with six points in 58 seconds, capped off by a jumper from Eliza Quinones (Bangor, Maine) with 4:45 to go. The Engineers maintained control as Groark scored four of the team's five points in the final minutes to take the 83-47victory. 
 
Clark finished 20-of-59 from the field (33.9%) while connecting on just 2-of-16 from three-point range in the contest. MIT knocked down 31-of-62 from the field (50.0%) while hitting on 12-of-30 scoring chances from beyond the arc (40.0%).
