Women's Soccer Makes It Five In A Row Against Smith with 2-1 Victory

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.- The Cougars (9-4, 5-1 NEWMAC) made it five straight wins on Saturday against Smith (4-5-4, 1-3-2 NEWMAC) with a 2-1 victory.

Despite the Pioneers holding leading 1-0 at the half, the Cougars rallied behind goals from graduate student Sarah Berube and senior Mia Advocate, with an assist to Jamie Joseph to secure the 2-1 win.

Coach Smith's Thoughts

" I'm obviously thrilled that we were able to come from behind and get the three points we needed to secure a spot in the postseason," said head coach Brienne Smith following the win. 

How it Happened

•First-year Isabella Ramirez launched a shot on goal for the Cougars in the second minute that was saved by Smith's keeper Naomi Falkenberg.

•Berube, senior Mia Advocate, and junior Emma Tziachris would also put shots on goal for the Cougars early in the first half.

•Smith striker Zufan Bazzano scored to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.

•Junior Siobhan Lounsbury put up multiple shots on goal for Clark in the 33rd minute, nearly breaking the scoreless tie.

•In the 57th minute Clark was awarded a penalty kick. Berube took the shot, and sunk it home, tying up the game a one apiece.

•First-year goalie Anabella White made a pair of saves in the 70th minute to keep the score even.

•The Cougars took the lead when Joseph punched a shot into the back of the net.

•Lounsbury put up another good effort with a hard-kicked shot on goal in the 83rd minute.

Inside the Box Score

•The Cougars outshot the Pioneers 12-7, with the scarlet and white putting 11 shots on goal.

•White improved her goalie record to an impressive 5-1 on the season.

•Berube's goal was her sixth goal as a member of the Cougars, and her fourth career penalty kick goal.

•Advocate's goal was her third this season and Joseph's assist was her first of the year.

What's Next

The Cougars take the field Wednesday for a NEWMAC matchup against Emerson. The kickoff is at 7 p.m. from the Granger Athletic Field.
