Women's Basketball Drops Season-Opener to Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (0-1) opened its season with a 57-52 loss to Worcester State (1-0) on Friday night in the first game of the Worcester City Tournament from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened

  • Clark got out to an early 10-7 advantage led by six points from graduate student Hannah Favaloro and four points from senior Ginny Benbow, but the Lancers ended the period on an 11-2 run despite made free throws from Favaloro and Benbow as Worcester State led 18-11 at the end of the first.
  • The Cougars got back within three early in the second with a Favaloro free throw and a made layup from senior Cam Richey and got within three and a pair of Richey feee throws pulled Clark within one at 20-19 with 4:50 to go in the second.
  • The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the remainder of the second and the score was tied at 30-30 at the break after a three-pointer from senior Hallie Johnson off a pass from Richey and two more Richey free throws.
  • Benbow opened the second half with a layup to give Clark a lead and extended the lead to 37-35 midway through the third on a three from junior Julianne Liewbow.
  • The Lancers ended the third on a 7-2 run despite a pair of free throws from sophomore Alaina Schatzabel to take a 44-39 advantage into the fourth.
  • Junior Jalin Waters connected on a jumper early in the fourth to pull within three and the two teams traded baskets over the next five minutes before Favaloro connected on a layup to pull within one at 48-47 with 3:47 to go.
  • Worcester State then went on an 8-3 to go up 56-50 with 1:18 to go and Favaloro again made a layup to get within four with 1:10 remaining before the Lancers pulled away with a 57-52 victory.

  • Favaloro led the team in points with 16 and rebounds with nine.
  • Benbow and Richey contributed nine and seven points respectively.
  • Clark grabbed 37 total rebounds, dished out 10 assists, and recorded 11 steals.
