Field Hockey Tops Anna Maria 2-0 for First Win of Kurzanski Era

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University field hockey team (1-4) returned home for the first game of a four-game home stretch and recorded a 2-0 victory against Anna Maria (1-4) on Tuesday night from Granger Field. The win was the Cougars first under head coach Kate Kurzanski.

Coach Kurzanski's Thoughts

"It was a great team win today," said Kurzanski following the win. "Our girls played hard every minute and fought until the very end. We controlled the controllables and played a very sound game of field hockey. Two early goals from McCarty gave us the early lead and the ability to take a breath early on and a killer stroke save by Sawyer fired our team up to compete until the very end. Overall, we played well on both offense and defense and I am excited to move into NEWMAC play this weekend."

How it Happened

  • Sophomore forward Greer McCarty opened the game with her second goal of the season as she beat the Anna Maria defense to give the Cougars an early 1-0 advantage in the 3rd minute,
  • Senior Grace Sawyer recorded her first save of the game in the 11th minute when Anna Maria earned a penalty corner and the Cougars then turned down field and McCarty added her second goal of the night and third of the season in the 12th minute off a nice pass from first-year Autumn Golding to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • The assist was Golding's first of her career and first career point.
  • Early in the second quarter, Clark earned three penalty corners, but were unable to score and towards the end of the period, Sawyer registered two more saves as the Cougars led 2-0 at the half.
  • Senior Emma Boland attempted a pair of penalty corners in the third and one early in the fourth that were denied before McCarty put her third shot of the game on goal, but Hannah Tobey made the save for Anna Maria as Clark pulled out a 2-0 win.
