Field Hockey Drops NEWMAC Opener Against Wellesley

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University field hockey team (1-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) opened NEWMAC play with a 3-0 loss to Wellesley (2-0, 1-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened

  • Wellesley opened the contest with a goal in the second minute on a shot from Amy Kate Williams that found the back of the net.
  • The Cougars offense responded by applying constant pressure on Wellesley's backline as junior Abbe Cravinho fired a shot on goal and senior Kimberlie Asseng also threw two shots on goal that were stopped in the eighth and ninth minute of play.
  • Senior goalie Grace Sawyer came up big at the end of the first quarter with three timely saves as the match remained 1-0 after one frame.
  • Cravinho came out aggressive again in the second quarter as she fired another shot on goal that was saved and sophomore Greer McCarty also recorded a shot on goal in the 22nd minute that was saved by Kyra Deehr-Lewis.
  • Graduate student Anna Joyce and Asseng continued the constant pressure towards the end of the second, but again were stopped as the Cougars trailed 1-0 at the half.
  • Wellesley's Alex Lenart fired three shots on goal in the third, but was denied by Sawyer came up with saves on all three of them as the score remained the same through three periods.
  • Lenart extended the Blue's lead early in the fourth and almost added another, but senior Emma Boland recorded a defensive save.
  • McCarty fired the Cougars last shot on goal that again was saved and Wellesley added another goal before the end of the contest.

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark recorded 14 shots in the game and eight of them reached the goal.
  • Asseng led the team with three shots on goal, while Cravinho and McCarty put two on target.
  • The Cougars earned six penalty corners.
  • Sawyer recorded nine saves in the contest.

What's Next

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday night when they welcome UMass Dartmouth to Granger Field beginning at 7:30 p.m.
