WORCESTER, Mass.- On a picture-perfect sunny Sunday the Clark men's tennis team got their season off to a hot start with a 7-2 win over Regis. After a closely contested set of doubles' matches saw the Cougars take a 2-1 lead, the scarlet and white went to work in singles, coming away with five of six points.
Doubles
- The Clark duo of junior Sam Pomann and sophomore Tanner Honnef gave the Cougars their first point of the match at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win over Mitchell Weiner and Owen Pelissier.
- The Pride evened the score with a No. 3 doubles win. Josh Nolen and Lenny Tam defeated Clark graduate students, Duncan Drapeau and Holden Moore.
- No. 1 doubles saw junior Dariy Vykhodtsev and first-year Ryan Hovey fall behind 2-5 early to Regis' team of Sebastian Torres and Andrew Bienvenu. The scarlet and white clutched up in big moments to force a tie at 7-7. The Cougars needed to save two match points before Vykhostsev won the tiebreak 8-6 with a passing backhand to give Clark a 2-1 lead.
Singles
- Hovey continued his successful debut with an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 win over Pelissier at No. 4 singles.
- Graduate student Josh Podolsky gave Clark their fourth point with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Tam at No. 5 singles.
- Fellow first-year Aidan Hurtado also made the most of his Clark debut, winning 6-2, 6-4 over Nolen at No. 6 singles. The point was Clark's fifth and sealed the match.
- Regis earned their second point at No. 2 singles when Bienvenu came out on top against Honnef 6-4, 6-3.
- Pomann dug deep for Clark at No. 3 singles and despite dropping a second set, played big-time tennis when it mattered most, winning 6-3, 2-6, 10-2.
- Clark finished the 7-2 affair when Vykhodtsev used his power and precision to defeat Torres at No. 1 singles. The score was 7-6(5), 6-3.
