Volleyball Falls to Coast Guard on Tuesday Night

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (9-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) took the first set against Coast Guard (10-4, 3-1 NEWMAC), but fell 3-1 to the Bears on Tuesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

The Cougars took the first set 25-21 and fell 26-24 in the second, 25-22 in the third, and 25-19 in the fourth as they dropped their second conference match of the year.

How it Happened

  • Clark took an early 10-5 lead sparked by two kills from junior Claudia Rivera, a kill from sophomore Camille Flurry, and a service ace from senior Bailey Vogel and pushed the lead to 18-12 later in the set thanks to two kills from sophomore Victoria Pastor.
  • Despite the Bears pulling to within three points of the lead at 22-19, the Cougars prevailed 25-21 in the set with kills from sophomores Sheyenne Williams and Sofia Scherrer del Llano, and Rivera.
  • The second set was tied 7-7 early as four Cougars recorded kills and after trailing 14-9, Clark clawed back to tie the set at 18-18 thanks to three kills from senior Margarita Perez Maza and the teams battled to a tie score of 24-24 before Coast Guard took the next two points to win 26-24.
  • Coast Guard got out to an early 10-4 lead in the third, but Clark fought back to make the score 13-12 as senior Marimo Oka registered two service aces in that stretch and the set ended up being tied 20-20 thanks two more kills from Rivera and Scherrer del Llano, but the Bears pulled away with a 25-22 win in the set.
  • After the fourth set was tied 5-5 early, the Bears went on a run, pushing the lead to 16-9, but again Clark fought back to get within four at 21-17 thanks to two more kills from Pastor and Rivera before falling 25-19.

Inside the Box Score

  • Rivera tallied a team-leading 14 kills and Pastor was second on the team with 12.
  • Scherrer del Llano registered eight kills.
  • Senior Sophia Torino led the team with 22 assists while first-year Yvanna Torres recorded 21 assists of her own.
  • Oka registered a team-leading 25 digs and first-year Gabi Acevedo Perez also reached double digits with 12 digs.
  • Clark recorded 48 kills, 47 assists, and 70 digs in the match.

What's Next

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Babson for a conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
