Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. - Clark University women's soccer (2-0) recorded a thrilling 2-1 win on the road over Brandeis (1-1-1) on Wednesday night from Gordon Field.
Sophomores Emily Rooney and Imani Salazar netted the Cougar goals, with Salazar's coming in the first half and Rooney's early in the second. First-year Isabella Ramirez dished out assists on both of the Clark goals. Senior Morgan Small came up with seven critical save as the Cougars recorded the road victory.
Coach Smith's Thoughts
"We played with grit and guts tonight," said Smith following the victory. "Lots of players came up big and made the most of the opportunities they had. We defended tough from front to back and played with a lot of heart. I'm really proud. This is a true team win!"
How it Happened
- Brandeis created a pair of early chances in the fourth and fifth minute that Small recorded saves on and then came up with two more saves in the next seven minutes of play to keep the game tied early on.
- Salazar, having just entered the game as a sub in the 15th minute, found the back of the net in the 16th minute off a great pass from Ramirez to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
- Salazar again put pressure on the Judges backline with a shot in the 26th minute that was saved and Brandeis put the final shot on goal in the first half in the 35th minute that again Small recorded the save on as Clark led 1-0 at the half
- Clark's offense came out looking to add to its lead early in the second half and did as Rooney found the back of the goal off another nice pass from Ramirez to put the Cougars up 2-0 in the 48th minute.
- Small registered another save in the 55th minute, but Juliette Carreiro found the goal to trim the lead to 2-1.
- The possession then continued to go back and forth before junior Emma Tziachris put a shot on goal that was saved in the 70th minute.
- The action then picked up again in the 85th minute when the Cougars earned a corner and got another attempt from Tziachris off the corner and an attempt from Salazar that was stopped.
- Brandeis saw its last attempt on goal come in the 88th minute when Lauren Mastandrea had her shot saved by Small and the Cougars came away with a 2-1 victory.
