Favaloro Joins 1,000 Point Club in Loss at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (6-7, 0-1 NEWMAC) opened its NEWMAC season with a 65-58 loss against WPI (12-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from the Harrington Auditorium.

Graduate student Hannah Favaloro became the 23rd player in program history to reach the 1,000 point club with an and-one layup with 8:43 to go in the first quarter.

How it Happened

  • Clark opened the first quarter with a 10-8 lead sparked by six points from Favaloro and two points from both senior Emily Sifferlen and first-year Megan Swedberg and at one point led 15-11 with points from sophomores Mariah Harris and Jacqueline Faulise before WPI ended the first quarter with a 16-15 lead.
  • Sifferlen connected on a three-pointer to open the second quarter to give Clark a two-point edge before the Engineers scored seven unanswered points, but Harris ended the run with a jumper as the Cougars trailed 23-20.
  • Sifferlen then stole the ball and made a layup to pull within one and Favaloro made a three as Clark trailed by two, but the Cougars outscored WPI by three over the rest of the quarter sparked by another Favaloro triple, a Sifferlen layup, and a pair of senior Cam Richey free throws as Clark led 32-31 at the half.
  • WPI opened the second half 10-0 run before Sifferlen ended the run with a pair of free throws and a Favaloro layup pulled Clark within seven at 43-36 with 4:46 to go in the third.
  • Clark went on a 9-0 run of their own sparked by a three-pointer from Harris to tie the game at 43-43 with 2:44 left in the third before the Engineers would respond and take a 52-43 lead into the fourth.
  • Richey made a pair of jumpers and three layups from Sifferlen kept the deficit at nine as WPI led 61-52 with 4:26 to go and a Sifferlen free throw got Clark within eight at 61-53 with 2:36 remaining.
  • Swedberg and Sifferlen made layups to get within four at 61-57 with 0:33 to go before the Engineers pulled away with a 65-58 win.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sifferlen scored a season-high 21 points and pulled down five rebounds.
  • Favaloro netted 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Clark grabbed 39 rebounds, dished out 11 assists, recorded nine steals, and forced 18 turnovers.

What's Next

Clark will return to the floor on Wednesday night when they welcome Babson to the Kneller beginning at 7:00 p.m.
