Volleyball Clinches Berth in NEWMAC Playoffs with 3-2 Victory Against Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (12-15, 4-6 NEWMAC) ended their regular season and clinched a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament with a 3-2 win over Wheaton (11-15, 2-7 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from the Evelyn Danzing Haas Gymnasium.  

Clark fell 25-21 in the first set, won the second set 25-23, fell 25-20 in the third set, won the fourth set 26-24, and won 15-7 in the deciding set.  

The Cougars with the win earned the No. 7 seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will take on No. 2 Babson on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

How it Happened

  • Wheaton held a 10-8 lead in the first set despite two service aces and a kill from junior Victoria Pastor and the team's traded points until it was 23-21 Wheaton as Pastor added three more kills and senior Claudia Rivera recorded a kill and a service ace as the Lyons won the first set 25-21.
  • The Lyons led 14-8 in the second set before the Cougars made a run sparked by two kills from Rivera with two assists going to sophomore Yvanna Torres and helped make it a 19-15 match.
  • Clark ended the second set on a 10-2 run led by two kills from junior Sheyenne Williams and a Torres service ace as the Cougars rallied to win the second set 25-21.
  • Wheaton took an 11-6 edge in the third set despite two more kills from Rivera and Clark got to within four at 17-13 in the third, but the Lyons took the set 25-20 as junior Camille Flurry paced the Cougars with two kills down the stretch.
  • Clark and Wheaton were tied 11-11 in the fourth set as Williams and Flurry each added two more kills.
  • The Cougars took a 19-16 lead in the set as senior Cameron Gill recorded a service ace and a kill, but the Lyons battled back to make it 23-23 before Clark won the set 26-24 with a Pastor kill and a Wheaton attack error.
  • Clark took a commanding 6-1 lead in the fifth set as Rivera recorded four kills, graduate student Marimo Oka registered a service ace, and a Williams kill.
  • Clark extended the lead to 11-5 with a Flurry service ace and a Pastor kill and the Cougars clinched the match with a Williams kill as they won the fifth set 15-7.

  • Clark recorded 49 kills, dished out 44 assists, and registered 92 digs.
  • Rivera and Pastor each recorded 14 kills.
  • Williams added nine kills.
  • Torres led the team with 25 assists and Perez Maza added 12 helpers.
  • Oka recorded 34 digs.
