Lounsbury's Goal in Double Overtime Propels No. 4 Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win Over No. 5 Springfield in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 4 Clark women's soccer (11-5-2) hosted a NEWMAC Quarterfinal game for the second straight year when they welcomed No. 5 Springfield (8-7-1) to Granger Field on Tuesday night and came away with a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory over the Pride off a goal from senior Siobhan Lounsbury in the 104th minute.

The victory was Clark's first NEWMAC playoff win since 2011 when they topped Babson 1-0 in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals.

With the win, Clark will travel to No. 1 MIT for a NEWMAC Semifinal contest on Thursday, November 3 beginning at 7:00 p.m. from Roberts Field.

"Games like tonight are what it's all about. A huge team effort. We knew it would a battle and we fought for 110 mins. Proud of every single player on this team. We look forward to another battle at MIT on Thursday night."

How it Happened

  • Senior Jamie Stern recorded the first shot attempt on target in the 18th minute that Springfield's keeper Taryn Ryan logged a save on as both defenses and midfields controlled the game.
  • Sophomore Anabella White kept the game tied at 0-0 in the 21st minute when Jen Walker put a shot on target that White saved.
  • Graduate student Jamie Joseph nearly gave Clark the lead in the 28th minute as senior Emma Tziachris serviced a corner in that found Joseph's head, but Ryan was in the right spot to make the save.
  • White came up with two more saves in the first half as the Pride's leading scorer for the season Kaleigh Dale and Vasiliky Rizos had shots saved as the match was tied 0-0 at the half.
  • Out of the half, White came up with two more saves off chances created by Walker and Kayla McGrath as the sophomore kept the game tied.
  • Sophomore Isabella Ramirez created a dangerous chance for Clark in the 78th minute with a shot from outside the box that was saved by Ryan.
  • Both defenses controlled the final 12 minutes of regulation as the teams headed to overtime tied 0-0.
  • Neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime, but in the second overtime, sophomore Isabel Echeverry found senior running up the right sideline and Lounsbury was able to head the ball past the keeper in the 104th minute as Clark held a 1-0 lead.
  • The Pride would get two more dangerous looks, with McGrath having a chance with two seconds left to tie the game, but White came up with a pair of saves as Clark advanced to the NEWMAC Semifinals.
