Women's Basketball Tops Salem State 72-63 on Tuesday

SALEM, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (3-4) played their first game of the home-and-home series against Salem State (2-5) and came away with a 72-63 win over the Vikings from the Twohig Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

How it Happened

  • Clark held an early 6-5 lead with a pair of buckets from junior Alaina Schatzabel and a made layup from senior Julianne Liebow with 4:13 to go in the first quarter.
  • The Cougars ended the quarter on a 6-5 run as graduate student Cam Richey, senior Sarah Zambrano, and Schatzabel each made layups as Clark held a 12-10 lead after one quarter of play.
  • After the Vikings tied the game at 16-16, Liebow made a pair of free throws, junior Jacqueline Faulise made a free throw, and Zambrano scored five unanswered points to give the Cougars a 21-16 advantage.
  • Liebow then made her first three-pointer of the game and a Schatzabel layup made it a 26-25 ball game and another Liebow triple before the half gave Clark a 31-29 lead heading into the half.
  • Senior Jalin Waters hit a three on Clark's first possession of the third quarter and another Schatzabel layup extended the lead to 36-29 with 8:33 to go in the quarter.
  • Schatzabel then scored five of the Cougars next seven points, including a converted and-one layup and after the Vikings got within two, Richey made a layup to make it a 45-41 ball game.
  • Liebow hit another triple before the end of the quarter and a layup from sophomore Megan Swedberg gave Clark a 52-48 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
  • The Cougars held the Vikings scoreless over the first five minutes of the fourth and got points from Schatzabel, Swedberg, and Harris as they possessed a 57-48 advantage.
  • Liebow hit another three-pointer with 4:14 to go to extend the lead to 61-52 and a Harris layup with 3:34 remaining pushed the lead to 63-52.
  • After the Vikings got back within seven, Liebow hit her fifth three-pointer of the game with 1:46 remaining and Richey made five free throws down the stretch as Clark recorded a 72-63 victory.

  • Clark grabbed 49 rebounds, dished out 12 assists, and forced 24 turnovers.
  • Schatzabel recorded a double-double as she scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
  • Liebow netted a career-high 20 points and pulled down six rebounds.
  • Richey added 11 points and dished out four assists.

What's Next

The Cougars will return to the court on Thursday night for a home game against Salem State beginning at 7:00 p,m, from the Kneller Gymnasium.
