Women's Basketball Drops Home Game to Salem State

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (3-5) played their second game of the home-and-home series against Salem State (3-5), but fell 68-65 to the Vikings on Thursday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened

  • Salem State jumped out to an early 9-2 lead despite a basket from junior Jacqueline Faulise and senior Sarah Zambrano hit a jumper at the end of the first to make it a 13-5 game in a defensive minded quarter.
  • The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to get within one sparked by a Faulise triple and a pair of jumpers from junior Mariah Harris before the Vikings pushed the lead back to eight with a seven point run of their own.
  • Harris and senior Jalin Waters each hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions and a made layup with 3:08 to go in the second from graduate student Julia Beebe tied the game at 22-22.
  • Senior Sarah Zambrano led the Cougars over the final 3:08 of the quarter with a pair of buckets and a layup right before the buzzer from graduate student Cam Richey gave Clark a 32-30 lead at the half.
  • After the Vikings retook the lead, Faulise tied the game at 35-35 with a three-pointer and a 5-0 run from a Schatzabel layup and Waters triple pushed the Clark edge to 40-35 with 6:01 to go in the third.
  • Waters connected on another three-pointer to extend the lead to as many as nine at 47-38 and a Richey layup with 1:35 remaining in the quarter pushed the lead to five after the Vikings went on a run.
  • Zambrano scored Clark's final bucket of the quarter and Salem State hit a shot right before the buzzer to make it a 51-48 game going into the fourth quarter.
  • Harris hit a three-pointer to open the fourth and a layup from Schatzabel made it a 56-49 game before the Vikings pulled within two at 56-54.
  • Schatzabel then connected on an and-one layup and a three-pointer from senior Juliane Liebow gave Clark a 62-56 lead with 5:24 to go.
  • Schatzabel made another free throw with 2:59 remaining to make it a 63-60 game, but the Vikings went on a 6-0 run to take a 66-63 lead with 1:44 to go.
  • Waters drew a foul with 0:52 remaining and made a pair of free throws to get back within one and after a made free throw from the Vikings, Waters attempted a three-pointer out of a timeout, but it came up short as Salem State won 68-65.

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark grabbed 52 rebounds, dished out 19 assists, and forced 16 turnovers.
  • Schatzabel recorded a double-double as she scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
  • Waters led the team with 14 points and connected on four three-pointers.
  • Harris added 11 points and four assists.
  • Richey grabbed eight rebounds, scored six points, and dished out five assists.

What's Next

Clark will be back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome Bridgewater State to the Kneller in a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
