Baseball Closes South Carolina Trip With 24-1 Victory Against Rivier

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Clark University baseball team (4-1) closed out its five-game trip in South Carolina with a convincing 24-1 win over Rivier (0-6) on Friday night from Ebbets Field.

How it Happened

  • Graduate student Chris Radovic got Clark on the board early with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored sophomore Samuel Farrell as the Cougars led 1-0.
  • Junior Benjamin Spencer took the hill for Clark and set Rivier down in order in the bottom of the first before fellow junior Ethan Belt singled to right field and drove in first-year Matthew Kalinak and sophomore Billy Sullivan to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Graduate student Steven Mooney and Farrell each scored on wild pitches as Clark extended the advantage to 5-0.
  • Spencer set the Raiders down in order in both the bottom of the second and the third before Belt and junior Ryan Caulfield each drove in runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Spencer held Rivier scoreless in the bottom of the fourth and Belt slapped a ball down the left field line in the top of the fifth that scored three more runs as Clark built a 10-0 advantage and Belt scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
  • Spencer's final two innings were also shutout innings and he allowed no hits in six innings of work.
  • In the top of the sixth, Kalinak hit a sacrifice fly that scored senior Zackary Gitschier and Belt hit a sacrifice fly that scored first-year Tyler Jones to take a 13-0 lead.
  • Clark scored 11 runs over the final two innings of the game, led by a two-RBI triple from first-year Sean Borden, and RBI's from Gitschier, Jones, Belt, first-year's Ryan Bonja and Seneca Hillock-Lonstein as Clark came away with a 24-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark recorded 14 hits in the victory and only allowed one hit in the game.
  • Belt went 3-4 from the dish with a double and a triple and drove in seven runs.
  • Gitschier also went 3-4 from the plate, scored two runs, drove in two runs, and stole a base.
  • Farrell was 2-4 with a double and scored three runs.
  • Borden belted a two-RBI triple and scored a run.
  • Spencer pitched 6.0 innings, allowed no hits, and struck out six batters.
