BOSTON, Mass.- On Saturday at the Boston College High School Tennis Courts Clark (1-5) lost 5-2 to UMass Boston (2-3). Despite the loss, the Cougars had two big points at No. 1 singles and doubles.
Doubles
• At No. 3 doubles UMass Boston took their first lead in an 8-3 win over Clark's pairing of graduate student Holden Moore and first-year Ryan Hovey.
• The scarlet and white would even the score with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Graduate student Chris Rübens and junior Dariy Vykhodtsev earned their second straight win together this spring at No. 1 doubles. The duo had several highlight-reel shots, including a back-the-back shot from Rübens and several hard reflex volleys from Vykhodtsev.
• In the closest doubles match of the day junior Sam Pomann and sophomore Tanner Honnef duked it out at No. 2 doubles. The match was knotted at 5-5 when UMass Boston got a break and held on for an 8-6 win to make the match score 2-1.
Singles
• At No. 5 singles graduate student Josh Podolsky lost a one-sided match to give the Beacons their third point.
• Playing for the first time in his career at No. 1 singles, Honnef rose to the occasion with a career-defining 6-4, 6-0 victory. The sophomore looked calm and confident and should look to carry this momentum into the NEWMAC season.
• The Beacons made it 4-1 with a win at No. 4 singles. First-year Aidan Hurtado stayed in many long rallies and used his forehand to put pressure on his opponent, eventually losing 6-3, 6-3.
• UMass Boston clinched the match at second singles. After dropping a 6-1 first set, Hovey scrapped back and nearly turned the tides in the second, before succumbing 6-4 to his opponent.
• Pomann and graduate student Duncan Drapeau were still on at No. 3 and 6 singles when the match concluded.
