Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Clark University baseball team (0-1) opened its 2022 campaign by rallying to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but fell 5-4 against Eastern Nazarene (5-2) on Monday morning from TicketReturn.Com Field.
How it Happened
- Graduate student Chris Radovic recorded the Cougars first hit of the season in the top of the first inning and stole second base, before the Lions got out of the jam.
- Junior Max Moss made his season debut on the mound today and struck out a pair of batters in both the first and second inning as the righty only allowed one hit through two innings.
- The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior Ryan Caulfield roped a grounder towards second that found the outfield and brought home junior Ethan Belt.
- Eastern Nazarene responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, but Moss bounced back with scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth and struck out his final batter of the game on the bump.
- Sophomore Maxwell Gitlin relieved Moss in the sixth inning and got out of a jam by forcing the Lions to ground into a 6-4-3 double play in what was now a 3-1 game.
- Clark's offense then responded with two runs to tie the game at 3-3, with the RBI's going to first-year Ryan Bonja on a single and sophomore Anthony LoCasto on a sacrifice fly.
- After Gitlin retired the Lions in order, Caulfield belted a triple to left center and scored on a wild pitch to give the scarlet and white a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning.
- Eastern Nazarene scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-4 advantage and Clark got a pair of runners on base in the top of the ninth, but weren't able to bring them home as the Cougars fell 5-4.
