Baseball Drops NEWMAC Series Against MIT

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (10-8, 1-4 NEWMAC) welcomed MIT (7-12-1, 2-2 NEWMAC) to Granger Field for a conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon and fell to the Engineers in both contests.

Clark fell 12-1 in game one and 14-8 in game two.

Game One: MIT 12, Clark 1 (F/7)

  • Junior Benjamin Spencer took the mound for Clark in game one and retired the Engineers in order in both the first and second inning and the Cougars offense had first-year Carter Doran single in the first and junior Connor Rulnick reached second base in the bottom half of the second before Clark's next two batters were set down in a 0-0 game.
  • MIT scored six runs in the top of the third and added another run in the top of the fourth before junior Ryan Caulfield walked, stole second and third in the bottom of the fourth, but was left on third base.
  • After MIT added five more runs in the top of the fifth, Doran belted a ground-rule double to center field and stole third, but was unable to score in the bottom of the inning.
  • Sophomore Andres Hulfachor threw 2.1 scoreless innings to end the game and first-year Sean Borden came around to score on a ball hit by Doran as Clark fell 12-1 in game one.

Game Two: MIT 14, Clark 8

  • Junior Max Moss took the bump in game two and pitched a scoreless first inning before the Engineers plated three runs in the top of the second.
  • Sophomore Billy Sullivan drove in Caulfield in the bottom of the second with a single to center field to get Clark back in the game at 3-1.
  • After MIT scored three runs between the third and fourth inning, Clark got back within one of the lead with an RBI single from graduate student Chris Radovic, an RBI walk from Sullivan, and a two RBI single from junior Ethan Belt as the Cougars trailed 6-5.
  • MIT plated three runs in the top of the sixth, but Clark again responded as they scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, with first-year Matthew Kalinak scoring, graduate student Trevor Ham hitting a sacrifice fly, and Caulfield scoring on an error from MIT as Clark trailed 9-8.
  • Junior Nate Bonini retired the side in the top of the seventh and had runners reach first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but they were unable to drive them home.
  • MIT scored five runs between the eighth and ninth and Clark left two runners on base in both innings as the Cougars fell 14-8.

What's Next

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Wheaton to Granger for a NEWMAC contest beginning at 3:00 p.m.
