SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- Despite losing two out of three doubles points, Clark (3-7, 1-2 NEWMAC) fought back to hand Springfield (3-9, 0-3 NEWMAC) a 6-3 loss on Wednesday.
Doubles
• The Pride got on the board to start with a win at No. 3 doubles against Clark's team of graduate student Holden Moore and junior Sam Pomann.
• The Cougars even things up with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles from junior Dariy Vykhodtsev and sophomore Tanner Honnef.
• No. 2 doubles would be a win between senior Max Schweitzer, first-year Ryan Hovey, and their Springfield counterparts. A late break gave Springfield the 8-6 decision.
Singles
• Springfield expanded their lead to 3-1 with a win over Hovey at No. 4 singles.
• Vykhodtsev started the rally for Clark with his power and netplay leading the dance in a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
• Honnef used a strong first set to pace his match in a 6-0, 6-4 win that evened the match up at 3-3.
• First-year Aidan Hurtado came up big for Clark at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory that should give the first-year lots of confidence.
• Pomann lead early at No. 5 before dropping a second set. In the third the junior regained form and played his best tennis, utilizing angles and volleys to wear on his opponent in a 6-1 final set.
• Schweitzer earned the sixth and final point for Clark at No. 2 singles. Like Pomann, Schweitzer won the first set before dropping the second but used his consistent top-spin and deep balls to outdo his opponent 6-3 in the third.
What's Next
Clark has the second half of their NEWMAC road trip on Saturday when they pay a visit to MIT. That match takes place at the DuPont Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
