Baseball Wins Pitchers Duel 2-1 Over Worcester State

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (12-8) won its second straight game on Wednesday afternoon against Worcester State (9-10) from Granger Field with a 2-1 victory.

How It Happened

  • Junior Casey Gorczyca made his first start of the season on the mound and struck out two batters in the first inning and Clark took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when first-year Carter Doran scored on a wild pitch.
  • Gorczyca retired the side in the second and in the top of the third, Gorczyca got out of a one out jam in which runners were on second and third with a strike out and a fly out.
  • The Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth as junior Connor Rulnick was on third, sophomore Billy Sullivan was on second, and junior Randall Safron reached first, but the Lancers got out of the inning.
  • Sullivan stole two bases in the bottom of the sixth and Safron stole second, but again Worcester State got out of the jam as the pitcher's duel continued.
  • Clark extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Doran stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • Graduate student Chris Radovic came in to pitch in the eighth and struck out two batters and sophomore Anthony LoCasto threw out a base runner as Clark took a 2-0 lead into the ninth.
  • Graduate student Sean Savage entered the game with runners on second and third with one out and Clark was up 2-1 and Savage threw a ball in the dirt as the Lancers attempted a squeeze bunt, so the batter missed and LoCasto tagged out the runner trying to steal home.
  • With the runner on third, Savage struck out the last batter of the game to seal the win.
