CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- MIT (7-5, 3-1 NEWMAC) defeated Clark (3-8, 1-3 NEWMAC) on Saturday. However, the story of the day involved Clark's No. 1 doubles team stunning the Engineers.
Doubles
• The Engineers picked up decisive points at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Senior Max Schweitzer and junior Sam Pomann played No. 2 while first-year Ryan Hovey and Aidan Hurtado played No. 3.
• Junior Dariy Vykhodtsev and sophomore Tanner Honnef went to war for Clark at No. 1. The pair traded eye-catching rallies with MIT and found themselves down 7-6 with four match points against them. Against all odds, the duo prevailed with passing shots and sharp angles and raised their level to Olympian heights during a victorious 7-4 tiebreak to put Clark on the scoreboard.
Singles
• MIT picked up the points they needed to win the match at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles. Pomann, Hurtado, and first-year Adrian Ramirez represented Clark.
• Honnef and Hovey were able to steal a couple of games but were ultimately overpowered by their opponents at No. 2 and 3 singles.
• Vykhodtsev found himself down 6-2, 5-2 despite quality play. The junior never gave up, bringing the match back to 5-5 with high-paced groundstrokes and well-angled volleys. Though MIT won the set 7-5m Vykhodtsev's comeback showed his grit and determination, traits he is well known for.
