Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Clark University baseball team (13-10, 3-6 NEWMAC) traveled to Coast Guard (16-8, 7-2 NEWMAC) and split a doubleheader after winning the first game and falling in game two on Saturday afternoon from Nitchman Field.

Clark won game one 10-6 and fell 9-6 in game two.

Game One: Clark 10, Coast Guard 6

  • Clark's offense showed up early as first-year Carter Doran and sophomore Samuel Farrell were hit by pitches, stole a pair of bases and each came around to score on RBI's from junior Ryan Caulfield and sophomore Anthony LoCasto as Clark led 2-0.
  • The Cougars added three more runs in the top of the first when first-year Matthew Kalinak singled to center to plate home two runs and graduate student Trevor Ham belted an RBI double to score Kalinak.
  • Junior Benjamin Spencer took the bump for Clark in game one and retired the side in order in the first and only allowed two runs in the second and third that featured three strikeouts.
  • Clark added five more runs to its lead in the top of the sixth when Ham scored on a wild pitch, first-year CJ Johnson walked in a run, Caulfield hit an RBI ground out, and LoCasto singled to right field to score a pair of runs as Clark led 10-2.
  • Coast Guard scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to get within 10-5 and junior Michael Carterud pitched the final three innings and only allowed one run while forcing a double play to end the game as Clark won 10-6.

Game Two: Coast Guard 9, Clark 6

  • Johnson belted a homer down the left field line in the top of the first to give Clark a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Junior Max Moss tossed a scoreless first inning and the Bears added two runs on sophomore Andres Hulfachor in the bottom of the second inning.
  • After two innings of scoreless baseball, Johnson singled to left field that drove in Doran and graduate student Steven Mooney, Caulfield hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and sophomore Billy Sullivan singled to put Clark up 5-2.
  • Mooney scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-4 game and Clark led by that margin all the way until the ninth, but the Bears added five runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 9-6.

What's Next

Clark will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Babson for a NEWMAC contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
